Recovering your Relationship

  1. DETACH WITH LOVE FROM THE ADDICT.  ATTACH WITH PASSION TO THE DIVINE.
  2. FORGIVE EVERYONE INVOLVED.  THE ADDICT.  YOURSELF.  OTHERS, SUCH AS FAMILY MEMBERS AND FRIENDS. 
  3. IN THE EARLY STAGES, FOCUS ON HEALING YOURSELF, NOT ON HEALING THE ADDICT OR THE MARRIAGE.  TRY...
    1. PRAYER, MEDITATION, WALKING. 
    2. READING, TELLING YOUR STORY, LISTENING TO THE STORIES OF OTHERS.
    3. FIND A MENTOR OR ROLE MODEL.  HE OR SHE MAY BE THE AUTHOR OF A BOOK THAT HAS HELPED YOU, A PROFESSIONAL CAREGIVER, AN UNDERSTANDING PARENT, SIBLING, OR FRIEND, OR A SPONSOR.  “WHEN THE STUDENT IS READY, THE TEACHER WILL COME.”   
    4. JOIN A GROUP AND/OR SEE A PROFESSIONAL COUNSELOR.
  4. SUPPORT EACH OTHER’S HEALING.  ATTEND CLASSES, MEETINGS, AND HEALING EVENTS TOGETHER.  SHARE SUPPORT MATERIALS.  MAKE HEALING A FAMILY PROJECT.  INVOLVE EVERYONE IN THE HOUSEHOLD.  (EVEN OUR CATS WENT OFF CATNIP IN SUPPORT OF US!)
  5. FIND A "NEW NORMAL" LIFESTYLE WITHOUT ALCOHOL, DRUGS, OR UNHEALTHY BEHAVIORS.  YOUR OLD LIFESTYLE OBVIOUSLY DID NOT PROMOTE HEALTH AND HAPPINESS, SO LET IT GO.  BE WILLING AND EXCITED TO FIND NEW WAYS OF THINKING, ACTING, BEING, AND DOING.  DISCOVER WAYS TO HAVE “SOBER FUN.” (NO, THAT IS NOT AN OXYMORON!).
  6. HELP OTHERS.  IT IS NEARLY IMPOSSIBLE TO BECOME WELL ALONE.  SUFFERING HUMANS NEED THE HELP AND SUPPORT OF OTHER COMPASSIONATE HUMANS.  WHO HELPED YOU?  MAKE YOURSELF OPEN AND AVAILABLE TO OTHERS WHO NEED HELP.  LISTEN TO THEIR STORIES.  OFFER TIPS ON WHAT IS WORKING FOR YOU.  PRAY FOR THEIR SUFFERING TO END.  PASS IT ON.
